We just returned from the 4th grade reenactment of the "Battle of the Alamo". Esteban was one of the Alamo Defenders. He has been very excited about his role. He kept showing us all the different ways he could die. The show was amazing and the kids did a great job. Esteban has enjoyed learning about Texas history this year. I realized tonight that Texas will always be a part of our children's lives. I even consider myself part Texan since I have spent 1/3 of my life here.
I have a good friend who summed it up quite nicely when she emailed me the other day. She said, "I ... love being Texan. I think it's because when people find out that my mother comes from Honduras, and I was born in America; they tend to always ask so what are you? And somehow I can't say that I am Hispanic or Latina because that doesn't seem to include it all, and I can't seem to say I am American because that also doesn't seem to cover it all, and somehow when I say I AM TEXAN it just makes it seem a whole lot better. I really can't explain it. I guess it has to do, also, that when I say I am Texan somehow it doesn't seem to offend neither my Latina family ... or my American family...."
The history of this state is rich and somehow, in some small way, we have been a part of it; Texas will always be a part of our family history.
