Mi Sombrero

The 1st grade had their annual Mother's Day program on the night before we moved to Utah. I debated whether or not we would attend, but his teacher insisted. My mom was in town and I thought it would be fun for her to go since she has never been able to attend any of their school programs.

Half of the program was in English and the other half was in Spanish. Most people I know from South Texas has a grandma that only speaks Spanish and since this program was for mothers and grandmothers, the school was accommodating. I think it is great! I realize this may be the last school program where he is taught to sing songs in Spanish. I want them to know more than one language, so this is a good start. I also realized that I will no longer enjoy my kid being the only blonde one in the crowd. It is so easy to pick him out of a group of kids.He was chosen to be one of the main dancers on a couple of the songs. He danced front and center. This would have terrified Aaron and I, neither one of us like to be in front of a crowd. He didn't seem bothered by it at all.

The 1st grade had performed earlier in the day for the school, so when I picked the boys up that afternoon I had several teachers tell me that he stole the show. One told me she had never seen a white boy dance so well and that he out danced the other Hispanic kids that grew up in this culture dancing like that. When I watched him that evening, I laughed so hard that I cried. (So did my mom so you know where I get it from.) I was trying really hard not to laugh because I didn't want him to see me laughing at him, but it was hilarious. He had on a huge sombrero and was shaking his hips like there was no tomorrow. I'm not sure how this picture will show up. It's not a great picture, but it's better than no picture. It really doesn't do him justice. I felt terrible because we had already packed our camcorder, and I wasn't able to record his performance of a lifetime. I wish I could watch it again and again. I'm so glad his teacher talked me in to going and letting AJ perform. I will always remember my little boy in the big hat, as mi sombrero.

He will dance for you if you ask. I have no idea where he gets his desire for performing. I tell you, the hardest part is not cracking up in front of him. Come over when you get the chance.

We too thought these pictures were the best! He is such a charmer!

He always has been the charmer. I used to think it was only his dimples. Now, there is just something about that sombrero.
