Home

Today I will the opportunity go to church with my parents. As I have thought about it, I realized some important things.

For the first 19 years of my life I lived in the same ward. I attended the same church building. It was the same building that my parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents attended. In fact, my great-great-grandfather helped build it after crossing the plains by handcart. In my hometown it is known as the Rock Church. Whenever I see it, I think of home.
For the last 19 years of my life I have called 10 different wards and branches home.  We have lived in 11 different houses in three states. With every move, I have known that I was home no matter where I was. I was where the Lord wanted me at the time.

Home is an interesting thing. The structure doesn't matter. What really matters is that the Spirit of the Lord is felt there. It is where the gospel is taught. I want my home to be a place of refuge for my family. A safe place to go where they are not teased or hurt. Most importantly, a place where they can feel loved. A place of peace and happiness.

In reality, that doesn't always happen, but at least it is a goal and something we are willing to work towards. Over the years I have learned that home really can be a heaven on earth when we are willing to put forth the effort to make it that way.

Happy Place

One mile north north of my house, this is what I see.
The north Texas skyline.

We live on the edge of the prairie. There are no mountains. There is no lush forest. There are rolling hills after rolling hills. The beauty of this area maybe harder to see but it is there. Some may say that it is bland and boring.  For me it is home. It is where my heart and soul reside. It is where I raise my children and live with the love of my life. It is home for my family.

This is one of my favorite places to go running. I exercise early in the morning and I love the peace and calm that comes as the sun starts to rise. I don't listen to music. I listen to the birds and the wind and my heartbeat and the sound of my feet. I listen to myself.

I believe that everybody should love where they live. No matter where they call home. We all need to find our happy place.

On Our Way Home

Aaron had to fly from Kansas City to go on a business trip leaving Este and I to make the eight hour drive home. Este drove the whole way. I was the navigator and I am so grateful for modern technology. The GPS was amazing not just for navigation but also to monitor the weather (We drove through a major thunderstorm.)
Our drive home took us directly through Moore, Oklahoma. On May 20, 2013 an F5 tornado (the most powerful rating) ripped through the town demolishing two schools and hundreds of homes. Twenty-four people were killed including nine children.

As we drove through Moore, I commented to the kids about how "normal" everything looked. As soon as I said those words we saw this.
It was hard to grab my phone and snap a photo as we were traveling at 70 m.p.h. down the interstate.
The remains of a billboard are on the left of the photo.  If you look closely you can see a man walking in front of the debris. That shows how high the debris is piled up. On the right of the photo you can see the "remains"  of a shopping center. The houses directly across the interstate were also heavily damaged. The movie theater next to the shopping center appeared to be unscathed.

We also saw churches being used as emergency shelters. Their parking lots were full.

We saw areas where there were mobile trailers set up for various home owner insurances.
We saw semis full of food and supplies and other various disaster relief.
We saw dump trucks full of debris. There were lots of dump trucks and even more debris. The work won't end for months and months.

Then, a few minutes later, everything was back right to "normal"

We were grateful to arrive home safely. It is always so nice to be home and sleep in our own beds. The memories we made were so worth it. The opportunity to visualize church history and to imagine the experiences of our ancestors. The feelings that we felt and things that we learned were amazing. Then, to top it all off, our ride home reminded us how nice it is to have a house to come home to. Sometimes you have to get away to appreciate all that you have right in front of you all along.

Settling In

A few random things as we are getting settled in our new home:

I hung the clock on the wall then eventually found/unpacked the batteries so it actually works.
We are in a new time zone and that has been an adjustment as well.

I often find stuffed animals hanging from the balcony. It is amazing what kids do for entertainment.
I couldn't get the rolls to rise inside the house so I set them outside on the back porch. It didn't take long for the heat and humidity to affect the rolls.
We aren't the only ones in a new home. Vanessa's squinkies have a new place to hang out as well.
We love, love, love Texas sunsets.

Home

Last month as I was flying to Utah after a weekend in Dallas, the man next to me on the flight asked if I was flying to home or from home. I answered, "Both." Then explained that we were in the middle of moving.

There are so many things that I love about our home in Utah.

I love that it is over 100 years old. We recently painted the exterior bringing the color scheme back to the time period of when the house was built and true to the craftsman style.
Thank you to my good friend and interior designer Heather McKell who helped make the decision as to what color easier.

I love the fact that the house has so much character. Multiple families have raised their children in this home. A neighbor who raised her children in our home walked through the house with me before we left. I loved seeing her reminisce as memories came flooding back to her.

I love the fact that it has a huge yard and beautiful flower gardens.
I love the mountain views and the crisp mornings. This is what I see as I run through the streets of Cache Valley.
On the other hand, I love the fact that our house in Texas house is brand new. We are the only people who have ever lived at this address.
I love the fact that it sits on a 1/3 of an acre and will be less work to keep up with.

I love the fact that this is all the flower beds that I will ever have to weed and I get to choose what to plant.
There may not be much of a view here but the girls love the view from their bedroom window.
They may be different and I love different things about each of my homes but, I realized long ago that home is where my family is.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf has taught:

"God does not look on the outward appearance. I believe that He doesn't care one bit if we live in a castle or a cottage, if we are handsome or homely, if we are famous or forgotten. Though we are incomplete, God loves us completely. Though we are imperfect, He loves us perfectly. Though we may feel lost and without compass, God's love encompasses us completely."

This Old Barn

There is this nice old barn on our property. I few years ago when we tried to sell our house, there seemed to be more interest in the barn than the house. In fact, I wonder if we could have found a buyer for the barn if it sold separately from the house.
On several occasions I have had people mistake the barn for a house. For instance, one day I found an advertisement hanging on the door. Every house in the neighborhood had one, including our barn (Vanessa insisted on being in the picture.)
The barn is quite versatile. It is our garage, woodshop, storage space, chicken coop, and outdoor entertainment center. (Esteban moved a TV and couch up into the loft.) It also becomes a fortress whenever Esteban's friends come over for an air-soft battle.
Just FYI, those are screens from my windows they are using as shields. (Gotta love teenage boys.)

Our barn is many things and most of all it's ours.

That Drawer

That drawer. You all know you have one. You know that drawer where you put everything when you don't know where else to put it. It's kind of the catch all drawer. It's usually stuffed full of junk. In our house, it's in our kitchen. Vanessa recently discovered it (Yeah!) and packed it up in one of her many purses (she takes after my sister with that respect). Soon I discovered "that drawer" dumped out on my bed. Exactly where I wanted it!I packed her purse back up and sent her on her way. The problem comes when I need a paper clip or pencil sharpener. We have to hunt down one of the many purses (you'd be surprised where we find them). I still haven't found my stapler. There are perks however. That drawer of mine has remained clean & organized for weeks, of course there's nothing it it but that 's okay.

Our New Refrigerator

The coldest room in our house is definitely the master bath. I told Aaron every time I walk in there, I feel like I'm stepping into a refrigerator. I realize it will only be like this for another 3 or 4 months. In the meantime, I like long hot showers so I can turn it into a sauna in no time.

Doesn't Anybody Want To Buy My House?

We have had our house for sale all summer long. There was an opportunity open up that if we sold our house we could go back to Texas. We had lots of people look at the house in the spring and early summer. Some were interested in the house, some were more interested in the barn. How is that supposed to make me feel?I decided to show you all virtual tour of our house.

This is our living room and study. We bought this piano about a year ago. My friend's mother purchased it, took it completely apart to clean it, and fix it up. After all of her work, she had the opportunity to buy a baby grand so she sold it to us for the same price she bought it. We wanted a piano, it didn't have to be a fancy one, just something for the kids to learn to play on.
We had the piano only a few months when Vanessa scratched it up. You know the wire in silk flowers, well, Baby Foofa took one and scratched every surface of the piano. I'm so grateful we bought it used.

This is our kitchen. This is what it often looks like. I try to keep it clean and usually it is but, every once in a while......This is our Texas room. My aunt gave me this couch and chair. They belonged to my grandparents before that. In fact, when my mom took my dad to meet her parents for the first time, my grandparents went out and bought this furniture before they arrived. My grandparents were trying to impress my dad. I don't know if he was impressed but, I am. We have a little sitting room at the top of our stairs. I love the built in bookshelves. We are a reading family so the bookshelves are a big plus. We are always checking the used books for sale at our local library. We are always buying books for 25 - 50 cents. The chair was my grandpa's and the rug was made by my great grandfather whom I never met. This is also our multi-cultural room with things from Mexico, Brazil, and Venezuela.
We have an extra room upstairs that is our guest room. Esteban lived here when we first moved into the house. He decided after a month or two he would rather be downstairs so he shares a room with AJ. I call this my green room. The bed is from my bed and bedspread is from my cousin. The bed frame is the frame my mom used when she was growing up. The desk in the corner where I use my sewing machine was built by my grandpa. The rocking chair in the corner is from my other grandparents. The painting on the wall was painted by me. All of my crafts are organized in the closet. It really is one of my favorite rooms in the house.
Downstairs we have the toy room. We clean it every couple of weeks but, honestly, it doesn't stay clean for very long. If you imagine all the toys all over the floor then you'll see what it usually looks like.
We also have our storage room. It is nice for the empty boxes I like to collect. We keep our food storage that we are working on building up down there. This is Ethan's room. The bookshelf was built by my grandpa. Ethan seems to enjoy having his own space. I think some nights he stays up pretty late reading. Esteban and AJ share this room. They don't seem to mind the bunk beds. I think bunk beds just part of growing up in a big family.
The girls like their room. It doesn't stay clean for very long either. This bedspread is one that my grandma made for me and my sisters when we were little girls. The girls want me to paint their room pink. I don't know how I feel about that. As you can see they like to keep Millie close to their bed.Our room has parquet wood floors. I like wood floors but this makes me feel like we are sleeping in a dance studio. You know how much Aaron likes dancing.......
Alas, as the summer progressed fewer and fewer people came to see the house. We haven't showed the house for weeks. I think the weak economy and horrible housing market has kept people from buying homes. We knew it was bad timing to sell the house but we also felt that it was right for us to give it a try.

School starts this week. Since we don't want to move the kids during the school year, we are taking the for sale signs down on today. We like the area and the people so, we can be happy here. We are fully prepared to live here happily ever after. As you can see by my tour, it's not the house that you live in that matters, it is the people and the memories that are inside.

Home Again

As kids, whenever we went out with my Grandma, upon our return to her house, she would always say, "Home again, home again. Jiggity, jog." I don't know what that means, but I know how it feels.

We made it home yesterday after only 25 hours in the car (tied a record). I am always grateful to find that our house didn't burn down while we were gone. I am also grateful the van didn't break down. The Suburban broke down in Gallop, New Mexico on one of our many past trips, a trip I would like to forget.

The kids did amazingly well inspite of the long ride. They were happy to be home and play with their toys in their rooms. It was nice for all of us to be back in our own beds. After driving throughout the night, it was just nice to sleep horizontally.

Savanah and the boys were wrestling in the living room last night when Savanah fell and hit her head on the rocking chair. Yep, we found ourselves in another "procedure room" at the doctor's office as she had 4 staples put in the back of her scalp. I'm grateful it happened at home instead 1700 miles from our doctor. Poor girl, that's twice in the last month. It was not a nice ending to a very nice vacation.

Reflections

I noticed the reflection on our pond the other day and had to snap a photo.

I'm not the best photographer, but you get the picture. Literally.

Home for the Holidays

I hate moving. Packing the belongings of 7 people can be so tedious.
The kids don't mind. In fact, Savanah and AJ found it amusing to sit on our furniture outside.

This is our new home. We feel like this house was built for us even though, the original house was built in 1903. In the late 70's, an addition was added to the back. The important thing is that it has enough space for our big family. The thing that got us most interested in the property was the big yard with a pond and a barn. Yes, come spring we will have ducks and geese once again.

When we first moved to Texas the nearest temple was 10 hours away in Dallas. Later, we only had to drive 6 hours to Houston. The last year we were there, it was a 4 hour trip one-way to San Antonio. Now, we can see the Logan Temple out of our back window. Since, that is where we were married, it means so much to live nearby.

Before and After

This is what my house looked liked last night. In fact, it has looked like this for several days. I strive to keep a house of order and cleanliness, but every once in a while, this happens. I've noticed that for some unknown reason people only "drop in" when my house is a disaster. Nobody just happens by when it is clean. I guess this is one of life's many mysteries.

Well, after a long day, I'm happy to show you what it looked like this afternoon. With 5 kids in the house, it didn't last long so I had to take the picture rather quickly.
