Best Birthday EVER!!

My birthday fell on the date 12-13-14 this year. The last time in my lifetime that the date will be sequential numbers. The day proved to be even more epic than the date.

I told Aaron my favorite breakfast is breakfast burritos. The problem is that in order to make them it requires using every pan in the house. In order to make my birthday a day of no worries Aaron bought breakfast tacos from Rudy's (one of my favorite BBQ joints). I think a brisket taco really is the best way to start the day. Plus we didn't dirty any dishes.

After a yummy breakfast, Aaron and I headed to the Dallas Temple. One of the women in the church that I visit on a monthly basis was going to the temple for the first time. It is one of those momentous occasions in a person's life. I was so happy to be there with so many women from church. As we gathered together in the temple, I just felt that the reason we call each other "sister" in the church is because we really are one big family. I love all my sisters!!

Later that afternoon, was Lexi's baptism. Lexi is like a daughter to me.

A few months ago, I was waiting for church to begin. Mike and Melanie usually sit by us so we can help them with the babies. They were running a bit late so half our pew was empty. A young girl came and sat down on the pew. I eventually scooted down and asked if her family was coming. She replied no. She was alone. It was the first time she had ever been inside a Mormon church.  I scooted closer to her and explained things throughout the meeting to her.

She later told me that earlier in the week she had just started to nanny for a family in the next neighborhood. She had taken the little boy out on a walk. She had become lost in the neighborhood. As she was trying to find her way back to the house she ran into the missionaries. They talked to her briefly and gave her a pass along card with the address and time of church on it. She had also recently met a member of the church which also peaked her curiosity in our church. When she came to church that day she was nervous and alone. She ended up staying for all three hours. She told me she loved the simplicity of our services. She loved that we take turns talking in church. It is not just one person preaching all the time. That week in Sunday School class we learned about the Plan of Salvation. As we learned where we come from, why we are here, and where we are going, it made sense to her. She went to Relief Society while I went to young women's. After church I went to find her and she was surrounded by women. She had a huge smile on her face.

The smile soon faded as she realized that she had lot her key to her car. We searched all over the church. We couldn't find it anywhere. Somebody suggested we pray. I offered a sincere, humble prayer and sure enough a little boy came walking down the hall with the key. It had been found!

Aaron asked if anyone had given Lexi a Book of Mormon yet. She replied no. Well, just a few weeks earlier I felt to order a paperback version of the scriptures and had them with me that day. I was able to give her a Bible and Book of Mormon.

Later that week, we went to see Meet the Mormons. When she asked to know more about our beliefs in the parking lot, I invited her to listen to the missionaries. She accepted. The missionaries soon started to teach her lessons every week in our home. They brought the Spirit with them every time. It was a great opportunity for our family to help teach her. It was perfect mission preparation for Ethan who will leave on his mission next summer.

As the weeks kept going by I was so impressed with Lexi's devotion to learning more about out church. She started reading the Book of Mormon. She loved the stories. She accepted all of our beliefs without hesitation. I felt the love our Savior has for her. She is an amazing soul and I know that the Lord is very aware of her.

Her baptism added my wonderful birthday. She looked beautiful in my temple dress she borrowed.
I love the light that shines in her eyes.
Her friend Rachael was there and these two girls are now my adopted daughters.
Lexi made me a delicious birthday cake.
Julia Richards just returned from her mission in Chile. She told me in Chile the custom is to take a bite out of your birthday cake. Yep, just stick your face down there and chomp.
I think I like this tradition. A great ending to a great day.

Youth Temple Trip

I love working with the Young Women in our church. They help keep me feeling young.

I had to opportunity to go to the Temple with these girls on a youth temple trip.
I loved helping them inside the temple. I love being able to teach them and learn from them.

I was grateful to serve in the temple with my boys too. It was an AMAZING experience to be there with both of them in the Temple. I love these two boys with all of my heart. It will be only a few short years before they leave on their missions and we return to the temple again with them. I enjoy being a mom and raising children in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
I love to see the Temple. I'm going there someday. To feel the Holy Spirit. To listen and to pray.

The Beginning of Great Things to Come

For the past few years, and even more so for the past year, I have been dreading the thought of Este leaving on his mission. I know it is the end of having all five of my kids living under my roof. It is the end of his childhood. It is the end of me being "in charge" of my children's life. The end of talking to and interacting with my kids every single day. It is the end of this phase of motherhood. The end.
As I sat in the Dallas Temple with him for the first time this past week. I realized this is not the end, it is the beginning of many great things to come! I was overwhelmed with feelings of gratitude that he is willing and worthy to serve the Lord for the next two years. There is nothing I would rather him do. I will see him again. I will get an email from him every week. I will still be a part of his life even if it is from a distance. In the temple I was overwhelmed with the happiness that comes from raising children in the Gospel. I felt such deep happiness for which I am so grateful.
I had thought about the day I would be in the temple again with Este for the past 18 years. I remember going to the temple every week when I was pregnant with him. Life has changed so much since then. Our family has gone down paths I wasn't even aware of at that time. The Lord has guided us to know where to go and what to do. It all leads back to here.
I am so grateful that my mom was able to be with us in the temple. My mom and I were able to receive special attention for being the missionary mom and grandma. I am so grateful she was there with us on this special day. This will always be one of my favorite photos of my mom.
I know there will be hard times ahead for him and for our family but, that is what the gospel brings: Hope. Hope for a better tomorrow. Hope for a life centered on Jesus Christ. Hope for happiness in a moment that can be hard. Hope for eternity.

Quick Trip

Aaron and I made a quick trip to Utah at the beginning of the month.

My mom, who had just retired the week before, flew down to stay with our kids while we were gone. It was so nice to see my mom and have her visit our new home for the first time. We went shopping and out to lunch the day after she arrived. It was kinda sad to leave my mom but the kids were so happy to have her here without me. She made homemade doughnuts with them, took them out to eat at a buffet, and loaded the house with treats and junk food. The kids were in heaven!

Upon arriving in Cache Valley, we visited our good friends Vaea and Salli to meet their new baby, Emosi, who was only three weeks old. I LOVE holding newborn babies! They are so cute, and cuddly, and they smell so good. It was nice to visit with their family and see all of their kids.
Aaron and I went to the Logan Temple on Saturday where we were able to see our nephew, Keeton, sealed to his parents for time and all eternity. It was so special to be in the room and feel the Spirit that was present. I am grateful that Keet is a part of our family.
We enjoyed lunch at a local restaurant with the rest of the family. It was fun to see all of our nieces and nephews. I did noticed the obvious disappointment on their faces when they realized it was just us. No kids.

We visited Aaron's mom on Sunday morning. She is halfway through her chemo treatments for the cancer she was diagnosed with this last summer. She is an amazing woman. She is so sick that she lays in bed day in and day out yet, has incredible faith and strength. I learn from her example.

We visited my family that afternoon. It was nice to visit my dad and brothers' families. We enjoyed a great dinner together. We stopped by my sister's house for a minute before heading back to Salt Lake to catch the flight home the next morning.

Although this trip seemed like a whirlwind, it touched me in so many ways. As I held a new baby, I thought of Mary holding her newborn Son. I'm sure she admired his mouth, nose, ears, hands, and feet just as I did when I held Emosi. As I was in the temple with Aaron's family, I thought of how grateful I am that family relationships go beyond this life. (For more information, click here). As I sat by Elaine's beside, I knew that peace and comfort will always accompany faith.

This trip was perfect timing at the beginning of the Christmas season and just what I needed.

Out of This Galaxy!

Ever since the fifth grade Este has played for the CV Galaxy soccer team. We have spent countless hours on the sidelines cheering, grimacing, and loving to watch his team play. This year's President's Day Cup in Mesquite, Nevada was just weeks before high school tryouts. We all knew some of the guys would make it and some would not. They went out and played their guts out in one more tournament. Their playing was out of this world, I mean galaxy!
Even Ethan had a moment of greatness out on the field as he ran a water bottle over to Este at halftime. (I was in so much trouble for even taking this photo. Good thing he doesn't read my blog!)
Poor Savanah's moment of greatness was in the Instacare when she was diagnosed with strep throat. The doctor informed me that she would be contagious until she had been on antibiotics for 24 hours. I informed the doctor that our entire family had either been in a car or a hotel room for the past 48 hours. He just said to call when others started showing symptoms. This is how Savanah spent the trip...hanging out in the hotel room with a fever.
Long time readers of my blog know that I am always happy when I can see the temple. Here the view from our room of the St. George Temple.

Touched by the Temple

Our local church leaders have recently put an emphasis on being more involved in temple work. Aaron and I have attended the temple more and I have felt the blessings that come from going there often. We have tried to involve our children as well.

On a recent trip to Salt Lake, we visited Temple Square. It was nice to just wander around.
We walked up the stairs to the Salt Lake Temple. I love these doorknobs.
While we were admiring the doors, a missionary offered to take a family picture.
The girls posed for other photos around the temple.
We reflected on the temple from the reflecting pool at the bottom of the temple
And from the top, in the Joseph Smith Memorial building across the street.
A few weeks later when we were in Provo visiting friends, we stopped by the Provo Temple.
While there, I took one of my favorite photos ever.

Weekend Getaway

For years, Aaron traveled with his job. It was really hard on both of us. The thing that helped us the most was knowing he was racking up the frequent flyer miles. A few weeks ago, Aaron called me from work to let me know we had some frequent flyer miles that were going to expire in September. He was wondering if I would like to go to San Diego for the weekend. He had already arranged for his parents to watch the kids. (Would I really say no?)
San Diego is right on the ocean in southern California. I had never been to Southern California so I was interested in everything. I LOVE exploring new places. There is so much to do there.
We visited SeaWorld. I loved the Shamu show and where you walk in a tunnel through shark infested waters.
We went to a dolphin show. They had a family from the audience go up on the stage as part of the show. The mom fell in the pool with the dolphins. A dolphin swam over to her while she was screaming her head off. She grabbed on the fin of the dolphin as it swam around the pool. Turns out, she wasn't part of that family, she was a SeaWorld trainer. The whole episode gave me a heart attack. (I could totally see myself falling into a dolphin filled pool and I'm not a SeaWorld trainer.)
One day, we spent some time at the beach. We went to Torrey Pine State Natural Reserve.
We walked for about a mile down the beach wading in the tide. Then we headed up a trail to the top of the cliffs. The view was amazing! Hiking in flip-flops was not.
For dinner, we went to the section of town called Little Italy. We found the restaurant with the longest line figuring it must have the best food. (This is exactly opposite of what we do when we have the kids with us.)The food was fabulous! I had the best eggplant parmigiana in my life (well worth the wait in line). The next day, while we were in Old Town, the first settlement in California, we looked for the Mexican restaurant with the longest line. Aaron still raves about his chicken in creamy jalapeno sauce. Again, well worth the wait.
We also ate at In-N-Out every chance we got. I heard people rave about In-N-Out. I thought it would have gourmet burgers of all varieties. Nope. There are three choices: Hamburger, Cheeseburger, and Double Cheeseburger. That's really all you need. The food is delicious! I have to say, I think that place is addicting. Something about the fries........

We spent some time at the San Diego Zoo. This place is huge! We walked and walked and walked and still didn't see it all. We rode a sky tram when we needed to rest our feet. They do have a bus system but, we decided we wanted the exercise. Something about the fries........
My favorite exhibit was the Giant Pandas. AJ did a report on these rolly-polly creatures last year. They really are adorable! I want to be a panda when I grow up. They eat for 8 hours a day and sleep for 14 hours. Pandas are cute when they are rolly-polly, people are not.
We also saw koalas, a two-headed snake (per Ethan's request), rare birds that are extinct in the wild, and a baby giraffe. Vanessa wants a baby giraffe for a pet. This will have to do.Sunday morning we went to a Hmong (Ethnic group from China, Laos, and Thailand.) branch. Everyone was very friendly. They greeted me with, "Good Morning, Sister. Welcome." I felt right at home.
Most of the meeting was in the Hmong language. We didn't understand a single word. We knew the prayers were over when the person stopped talking. It was completely enjoyable. I'm always fascinated by other cultures and I will never forget their hospitality. That's one thing that I love about our church, you can go almost anywhere in the world and have a friend.
The highlight of the trip was the San Diego Temple. It is breathtaking! I heard it was a gorgeous temple, it really is. We arrived in time for a Spanish session. I wore a headset (Which was not speaking English to me. I eventually figured it out. I think I was on the German channel at first.) The Celestial room is beyond description. I have never seen a Celestial room like it. The beach was beautiful. I love being near the ocean. SeaWorld was fun. Old Town and the San Diego Zoo were interesting and educational. The temple was beyond all of those things and more. It is true there is not another place on earth where you can feel such peace and isn't that what we all are looking for?

Texas Trip

A few weeks ago, Aaron and I went to Texas for the weekend. A friend asked me if we just needed our Texas "fix" and if we had the shakes from withdrawals. That was only part of it.

The real reason was to attend the wedding of Sandra. Long time readers of my blog will know that Sandra is one of our "adopted" daughters. She joined us for our Family Home Evening each week and right before we moved to Utah we went to the San Antonio Temple with Sandra so she could be sealed to her parents who have both passed away. In my heart, she really is my daughter.
The wedding was beautiful! We hadn't met her husband previously. Aaron welcomed him to our family. He seems like a really nice guy and he makes her happy. She asked Aaron to be one of the witnesses and it was moving to be back in that temple with her on such a special occasion. It has been a cold, wet, spring in Utah so we really enjoyed the heat and humidity of south Texas. We went to dinner with some friends and enjoyed San Antonio especially Sea World.
Yep, we went to Sea World without the kids. It felt a little strange not constantly counting heads and worrying about one of the girls wandering off by themselves. It was actually quite nice. Having said that, I realize Aaron didn't have the same reaction to the penguins Vanessa would have. He should have squealed and jumped up and down in my opinion. The Shamu show was the hit of the day and always worth every penny spent to get into the park. I took tons of photos but will only share some of my favorites. It was there that I decided when I grow up I want to be a killer whale trainer. We had the opportunity to feed dolphins. Since, we didn't have the kids, I had the food to feed them all to myself. Several came over and started fighting over the food. It kind of made me feel at home, especially since my kids weren't with me.I did save one little bug for Aaron to feed with. The dolphins didn't want to eat the bug after all the little fishies I had just fed them. (I admit that was a bit selfish on my part.)
Have I ever mentioned I'm kind of afraid of animals? I found the dolphin's teeth a bit scary. (There goes my dream of whale training. I'll just stick to nursing.) Dolphins are probably my favorite animal (except for the teeth). Seriously, who could be afraid of this? One of the trainers noticed my apprehension and came over to help out. Just to clarify, that is me petting a dolphin. It was one of the highlights of my day.Aaron and I have been married for almost 15 years, we have lived in 3 states, we have 5 kids, and we did something on this trip we have never done before......we rode a roller coaster together.
Previous trips to amusements parks, had one of us staying with the girls while the other rode with the boys. This time rode it together. We rode in the front seats and then the back seats and analyzed which was better. The answer depends on the ride. (On a side note, I love wearing dangly earrings on roller coasters. It is so fun to feel them beat against your neck and face.)

We went to shows with flying dolphins,
big fat walruses,

and we also...
That's not really us. Just Kidding.

After the wedding and two days at Sea World, we headed south to our old stomping grounds. I don't have as many pictures from this part of the trip. That is when I stopped being a tourist and was just a friend. The next few days were a whirlwind. We stayed with our friend, at what I refer to as Hotel Rosie. We attended Sandra's wedding reception. As is custom for south Texas, it was a full on dinner and dance. We went to Mexico (remember this was right in the middle of the swine flu hype). Aaron was disappointed we didn't get the flu but he did buy a little wooden pig. We visited several friends and their families. We had dinner with Ernest and Elena in their new home (their previous home was destroyed in the hurricane last year). She is an incredible cook! The missionaries joined us for dinner and they agree with me about her cooking abilities. They asked me if we have any family in south Texas. I replied, "Yes. Elena is my sister and Ernest is my brother." I don't see how they couldn't see the resemblance. We attended church on Sunday. Our old ward has split since we moved to Utah. We weren't able to attend the new spanish ward. It was wonderful to see some of the people we worked with and served while we lived down there.

The whirlwind didn't end there. After church, we headed up to Austin to visit my sister. It was Mother's Day and it was very nice to spend the evening with her. I refer to her new house as Hotel Monica. We joined them for their Family Home Evening. After which, Aaron enjoyed bowling with Milo on the Wii.After the kids went to bed, we stayed up really late talking with Monica and Scott. It was so great just to hang out with them. The next morning we headed out to do some shopping at the outlets and the Texas Store. We had lunch at a local restaurant and, of course, Holly refused to eat in the restaurant and promptly dumped all her food in her lap once we were in the car (another act that made me feel right at home without my kids).

Before we caught the plane home, we went to Amy's Ice Cream, a local favorite in the Austin area. Aaron had pinenut-mango-rosehip-I-can't-remember-what-else flavored ice cream. I had Mexican vanilla with Reese's peanut butter cups (I know I'm boring but, vanilla really is my favorite ice cream flavor).

There was a whirlwind of activity back here as well. My poor mom agreed to stay with the kids while we were gone. This included 6 soccer games, church, and all the homework. I didn't realize how complicated my life is until I wrote it down on paper for my mom. They all seemed to have a great time without us. The house is still standing and my mom is still talking to me. I'd say the trip as a whole was a success!
