Today was the first day of Primary for the New Year. This means that all the kids at church changed classes, kind of like a new school year. As leaders, we thought we had everything organized. We had seating charts, class lists, and a meet-your-teacher activity all in preparation. Today we realized what we really had was chaos. When you have 100 little bodies to sit in the right row, find the new classroom, and their new teachers, reality sets in. All I can say is that the church is still true and it always will be.
Every January all the children who are three years old transfer from Nursery (lots of toys, snacks, and a short lesson) to Primary (no toys, fewer snacks, and a longer lesson). We have 20 children who are in this age group. One of which is my very own Vanessa. She has not wanted to make the transition. In fact, she has been quite adamant about staying in Nursery. I told her if she didn't go to Primary than I would just have to take away her birthday (I know it's not the most "loving mother" thing to say but, I was desperate.) She told me she didn't want a birthday, she wanted to stay in Nursery. She told me only aliens went to Primary. What can I say to that?
Well, the good news is that she survived Primary even with all the aliens. (I think it has something to do with the cookie her teacher slipped to her.) I LOVE working with the children at our church. Having said that, I must admit a happy thought for me is that we don't have to have the First-Sunday-of-the-New-Year for another 51 weeks.

So are you trying to say that you didn't think it worked with Lori doing crowd control, Brynne setting up 40 chairs by herself, you making sure 100 kids got to the right classroom and me chasing a stray through the parking lot was not exactly what we envisioned for our 1st Sunday to be like?
I think you guys did a great job. And those darling sunbeams did an awesome job at staying seated for the most part.
Maybe Vanessa knows something we don't about primary....
I tried to post a comment yesterday, but I guess it didn't go through. You guys must be better than you think, because I thought that everything ran smoothly!! I know how much work it took to put it all together, and I have to say that you guys are amazing!! Thank you so much for all that you do! I felt guilty that all I had to do was show up with a lesson!!
I love your post it's so funny! Tim thought they were a little like aliens too. But you guys try so hard ,keep up the good work. We sure appreciate all you guys do for our aliens!
I had no idea about the craziness either, I thought you guys do/did an awesome job. I love our primary presidency!! I liked the dexcription though, it shows how much you guys do.
I know all about the first sunday of the new year craziness. Even though our primary is shrinking (2 yrs ago we had over 100 primary kids, and this year we only have 65) it is still chaotic. I had to conduct in primary sunday and we had so many announcements and baptism spotlights, a faith in god presentation, and such that I thought I would lose my mind. But it went pretty well and all the kids did great. We had tons of new teachers this year because over half of our primary teachers were young adults and our bishop wanted to release them all so they could attend our new young adult sunday school class. Kera had her first real week of sunbeams too, and she was excited. I guess she didn't get the memo that primary was full of aliens. :)
I really miss the primary, (as you know I am the second counselor for the R.S. in my ward), but I still go around the primary to take announcements, etc, just to see what is like. My goodness you guys have so many kids though, I don't think there are that many in our ward, since the split, we are known as the old ward, we have more teenagers than primary age kids. It sounds like you guys are doing a great job, and I love your post about Vanessa and the aliens, only she would say something like that.
