Pickles and Popcorn

The PTA at the boys school had Family Movie Night tonight. Everybody took pillows & blankets, sat on the gym floor, and watched Chicken Little. The PTA sold popcorn, pickles, and sodas. It is interesting watching a movie with a huge room full of little kids. They laugh at silly little things. It was fun and I'm glad we went.

Now, lets talk about snacks. When Esteban was in kindergarten the school would reward students who had perfect attendance, with pickle and popcorn. They sell these huge dill pickles with popcorn everywhere down here, even movie theaters. Can you imagine sitting next to someone chomping a pickle during a movie? The boys love pickles and popcorn. They squeeze the pickle juice onto the popcorn. In fact, they told me that popcorn just isn't the same without pickle juice. The boys wanted me to try it. I have to say, it wasn't as bad as it sounds, but I still prefer good old butter flavored popcorn.

Then, I started thinking about all the unique snacks we have here. For 25 cents you can add a whole pickled jalepeno to your meal at most fast food chains including McDonald's and Burger King. Instead of asking, "Would you like fries with that?", they sometimes ask, "Would you like a jalepeno with that?". Football game concessions include Frito Pie, which is, a little bag of Fritos opened up, with chili and nacho cheese dumped inside. The boys also love Hot Chitos (the red ones, that are way to spicy for me) with nacho cheese on top. I also need to mention Elote. It is a cob of corn on a skewer, spread with mayonnaise, and sprinkled with chili powder. Doesn't that sound delicious?

I guess every area has unique snacks; we are returning to the land of jello and, of course, fry sauce, something to look forward to.

I've actually never tasted it. I'm with you, the thought of it makes me cringe.
