Texas Boy

AJ celebrated his ninth birthday last week. He requested a cake in the shape of Texas. He put candles in some of his favorite cities throughout the state. 1. Edinburg 2. Austin 3. San Antonio 4. Houston 5. Dallas 6. Amarillo 7. Corpus Christi 8. El Paso 9. Big Springs (we drive through there on all of our trips.)When AJ's best friend's parents told him that our house was for sale, (I'll write a post about that soon.), Joshua replied, "They're going back to Texas aren't they? It's no surprise, Texas is in his blood."

This reminded me of our visit to the doctor last year for his eight year old well check. The doctor said, "You're turning eight. Anything special happening in the next few weeks?" (It was obvious he was asking about his upcoming baptism. It is so different going to a Mormon doctor.) AJ didn't say anything in reply. The doctor was teasing when he asked, "Are you Jewish, or Catholic?" AJ said, "I'm a Texan." AJ didn't get it. I told the doctor we were Mormons and he was going to be baptized.

Aaron's mom claims it is our fault that the kids "roots" are dug so deep in Texas since we have the Texas Pledge of Allegiance on the bathroom wall. She thinks the kids feel the need to salute the flag and repeat the pledge every time they use the bathroom. (I don't know if they really do or not but I wouldn't stop them either way.)
I already explained to our realtor that he needs to make sure any potential buyers understand that the Texas shower curtain and all the Texas memorabilia in our Texas room do not convey with the house. Anything burnt orange goes with us.Maybe it is our fault. We celebrated Texas Day a just few weeks ago. What is Texas Day? Well, on April 27, 1996 Aaron, baby Esteban, and I arrived in Texas for the first time. We didn't know anybody. We didn't have any jobs. We rented an apartment site unseen and moved our few belongings in. That decision changed our lives forever. We spent 10 years there and will forever be grateful for it. We immediately fell in love with the people, food, culture, climate, etc. etc. Three out of our five kids were born there. The ironic thing is that the other two are bigger fans of Texas than the "natives". In celebration of Texas Day, we cooked fajitas, rice, and beans.I also made a Coco-Flan cake. Delicious. (I just posted the recipe on Turner Tastes.)Vanessa insisted on having candles in the cake and we sang "Deep in the Heart of Texas" before all the kids blew out the candles. ( I know that is soooooo cheesy but, it is our family tradition so we can do whatever we want.) I think every family should "invent" their own holidays. It's like we have our own little secret family tradition.

Well, it is no secret how AJ, and all of us feel about Texas. We enjoyed celebrating another year with our AJ, our very own Texas boy.

Glad he had a great birthday. Any state is sooo lucky to have you. I know that for us in Utah we hope that you stay but I am sure those in Texas are wishing you come back too!!

We heard through the grape vine that you were moving back to the valley (and your last post confirms it). We hope to make it there to visit you, we just don't make the trips very often anymore. Happy Birthday - "Texas Boy".

What is this about moving back to the valley?? I have to say though that I'm not surprised. You guys just can't stay away. I don't blame you, we loved our time in Edinburg, and both Jacob and Kera were born there, so we have some strong ties to it as well. Tell me more about your decision to move back, and when will you be leaving?

Thank you all for the comments.

I will give more details about our possible move on a later post. The short of it is that if we can sell the house, we will move back to Texas (in this real estate market, that is a big "if"). If our house doesn't sell this summer than we will obviously stay in Utah.

Stay tuned to find out where we end up.

Bailey insists that he, Abby, and Lucy will always be Texans, but the baby, it will be a Marylander. Silly boy. I'm sad that we missed you guys in Texas. If you ever find yourself out here, feel free to come stay!

Wasn't Lucy the only one that was born in Texas? You will have kids born in three different states. That's cool! Hope all goes well as you settle in.
