Politics

I usually leave political discussions off my blog. This time I'll make an exception.

AJ was recently in a run-off election for class president. He was up against a girl and another boy. The fifth grade political arena makes this a difficult prospect for him. We explained to him that the girls would probably vote for the girl and the boy's vote would be split between him and the other boy. The cards were stacked against him.
Aaron and I became his campaign managers. We tried the he-who-spends-the-most-wins strategy by having AJ hand out full sized candy bars. (Isn't "bribery" another name for that?) Alas, the fear of cooties overcame the chocolate bribe. The girl won. AJ seemed to take the loss well. He was worried about wasting money on the candybars. I pointed out that he gave to them to his classmates and that is never a waste. Plus, at Halloween we hand out candy to strangers.

The lost presidency didn't keep him down. Now, he is on the geography bee team and moving on with life.
