Just about the time we had the boxes unpacked and life started to settle into somewhat of a routine we returned to Utah.
The drive from current home to former home is only 18.5 hours. That is nothing compared to the 26 hours we used to drive from South Texas. Plus, now Este drives and I no longer have to. It makes the trip even better.
Aaron is a superhero when it comes to driving. He will drive 14-15 hours before he needs a break. That's when I used to, now Este, takes over the wheel.
There is something to be said about driving all night when it is just us and the truckers on the road. There is a peace and calm that is indescribable.
Then again, maybe that peace comes from the fact that everybody else in the car is asleep.
Back in the day when I would drive Aaron would sleep with one eye open. He never fully trusted me at the wheel at 2 o'clock in the morning. Now that Este drives that stretch of the trip, Aaron curls up in the fetal position and sleeps soundly. I am not offended at all because I'm curled up just as well.
People are always amazed at our road trips and that fact that we drive non-stop with five kids in the car. Our poor kids don't know anything different. They just know that the next stop won't be for another five hours and if you behave....you can get a treat at the next gas station. Simple as that.
Some our greatest memories come from these road trips. Through them we have learned that life is a journey, not a destination.
