The Life of a 10 year-old Boy

A few days ago, Steb won a couple of trophies at school. I asked him if I could take a picture of him for his scrapbook. I told him he was so cute. The problem is, my boys think "cute" is the ultimate insult. I wasn't intending to make him mad. I was just teasing him a little bit. Well he said, "You know mom, one day I'm going to be quarterback for the Longhorns. If somebody asks me, Is that your mom over there? I'll say, who her, I've never seen her before in my life."
I thought this was very funny and then I realized it's kind of scary. Josephus told me this morning that Steb is everything a girl wants. He likes sports and has blonde hair. I was interested and even more scared, because I know someday he'll like the girls in return. I'm also considering moving to a place where there are more blonde boys in his class. Here, he is the only one.

I know I don't have much time left with him before he turns into a teenager and refuses to acknowledge me. I'm trying to establish a pattern of communication with him now, so it will seem natural later on. Saturday, while we were working together, he was telling me about the largest land predator (polar bear) and the boiling point of water (212° F). I don't know the temperature of boiling water. I only know when it boils, I need to add the macaroni and a few minutes later, mac & cheese is ready to eat. The life of a 10 year old might not be that interesting to me now, but it 6-7 years I'll be very interested in his life. It is not that important today, but it will be later, and plus, now I know all about the world's smallest spider found in Borneo.

I did not want to be the bragging mom, but you asked, so if you don't want to hear me brag than don't read further. Here in Texas, they have a program called UIL (no, I do not know, or care what that stands for). It starts in 2nd grade and there are different catagories, such as math, story telling, spelling, dictionary skills etc.
Each school has 3 kids per grade level per event that compete against each other. There are 27 elementaries in this district. He won first place in Math and 3rd place in Number Sense (they are given a certain time frame and they have to correctly answer as many math problems as they can). There you have it. I told you my pride would be sickening.
