Labor Day Weekend

My parents own property up in the mountains near my hometown. As a kid, I loved going camping up there. Now, my kids love it. Every summer when we would visit from Texas we would always go up there even if it was just for the day.

This summer, when we live close by, we haven't been up there once. My whole family decided to camp overnight for the labor day weekend. I realized early on that camping is a lot more fun when you are the kid verses being the adult and responsible for everything. I didn't realize how much work is involved.

The mountains get really cold at night during this time of year. We took every extra blanket in the entire house. We still ended up snuggling as a family in our tent to stay warm. My favorite part of the trip was when I laid in the tent with the kids talking. For our scripture study we talked about the story from the Book of Mormon when the prophet Lehi takes his family from their nice house in Jerusalem into the wilderness and across the ocean. We talked about how hard it would be to leave your house to live in a tent.
We spent the next day horseback riding, hiking, playing in the creek, and chopping down trees for firewood this winter. The boys enjoyed making hideout with their cousins that the grownups didn't know about. They used markings on trees to show the way to their fort. I can't believe how dirty we all were. There was a big black ring around the tub after we all bathed.
We went to church with Mom & Dad then stayed there Monday and Tuesday. It was a nice long weekend. Now, I'm back to reality and doing all the laundry including all the extra blankets from the entire house that now smell like campfire.
